Stainless temperature color change
WebbThe color depends on the temperature of the heated layers. The material surface remains even during annealing because nothing is removed from it; the color change is achieved through localized material heating only. The heat usually penetrates 20 to 30 µm deep in the metal surface. The two common approaches are based on liquid crystals and leuco dyes. Liquid crystals are used in precision applications, as their responses can be engineered to accurate temperatures, but their color range is limited by their principle of operation. Leuco dyes allow wider range of colors to be used, but their response temperatures are more difficult to set with accuracy.
